Getting 40 winks won’t give you lines around your eyes, it will literally do the opposite.
Sleep is sometimes like a great relationship, and sometimes like a terrible one. It’s easy to romanticise, feels amazing when you’re in it, and improves almost every aspect of your life. But that’s only if you remember to pay it enough attention. Ignore it, put it off, or focus on other things and it can bite you in the ass. And, your skin will pay the price.
There are a couple of things people still don’t realise about sleep. Firstly, everyone needs a different amount. The general goal is to aim for 7-9 hours a night, some are lucky and need less and some just need a bit more. If you’re honest with yourself you probably know which way you are, and if you ignore this then you’ll pay the consequences.
Oversleeping is still bad for you. Most people think they can “catch up” on sleep at the weekends or during time off, but there’s very little evidence that this actually works. If you’re exhausted, then, of course, you’re going to sleep longer when you can. But a long weekend of staying in bed until 11 won’t restore your sleep bar. Instead your body temporarily returns to a “normal” sleep schedule, this is why halfway through your week off you start waking up around 8/9am again. You’re no longer tired and instead are sleeping the amount that your body needs.
Not getting enough rest is visible to everyone. You’re skin is one of the first places to show signs when something isn’t right. Eat too much chocolate, you’ll get spots. If something is up with your liver, you could get jaundice and turn yellow. And when you don’t get enough sleep… you’ll be that pasty weird looking dude by the office coffee machine that no one wants to talk to. That, or you’ll get cast in a Tim Burton movie.
Yes, life is messy and it’s not always possible to stick to a rigid schedule. And sometimes you don’t want to (wink), and that’s fine. There are steps you can take to bridge the gaps.
Take a nap. 10-20 minute naps are not only deeply satisfying but they improve your productivity afterwards. It’s easy to feel guilty at the idea of being an adult taking a nap in the middle of the day, but think of it as in investment. A sacrifice of 20 minutes for a super productive hour. Instead of an hour and a half of getting nothing done and feeling shit (google “coffee nap” for a life hack that is an actual hack for your life).
Use a face cream. Naps aren’t a solution at the office, but you don’t have to walk around looking like a reanimated corpse. Face creams (like ours) reingerise and hydrate your skin, putting the balance back that you’ve lost. Just because you’re tired, doesn’t mean you have to LOOK like it.
Start your day right. Have a coffee, eat a decent breakfast, and find ways little ways to invigorate your morning. Even if it’s just placebo, tricking yourself into thinking you have more energy than you do actually works. After all that’s what caffeine does to your brain anyway. Our pro tip is our shower foam, for a more fun shower that you’ll actually notice. Plus, it’s alcohol free and extra foamy leaving your skin nourished and protected.
